In 60-plus years I have read hundreds of books but rarely a novel as good as "The Chilbury Ladies' Choir" by Jennifer Ryan. Letters and journal entries tell the story of the women of a small English village near Dunkirk left behind when their men leave to fight in World War II. It is a moving account of war's tragedy and the changes in their lives — and in themselves.
