RandBall: Theories on NFL ratings are varied

October 5, 2016 at 4:56AM

In this space Tuesday, several theories were advanced as to why TV ratings for NFL games have declined this season as compared to the recent past. While cord-cutters and the election cycle could be culprits, readers responded en masse with other theories either via e-mail or Twitter. Here are a few:

• "People are disgusted with the antics of Colin Kaepernick and others who are refusing to stand for the national anthem. People are fed up with the level of disrespect shown by these athletes."

• "I think the biggest reason for the drop in NFL ratings is overexposure. Sunday afternoon is fine. Then Sunday night followed by Monday night followed by Thursday night. Add in all the college games and it's too much in my humble opinion!"

• "League wide was not good football (in 2015). TNF is trash. Add wishy-washy rules and zero (referee) accountability."
