This photo comes from a friend and former colleague. These berries are growing in the yard next door. And they are to dogs, what catnip is to cats, apparently.
Are they safe to eat? Or poisonous?
Well, they sure look like the black raspberries that are erupting all over my garden. They appeared spontaneously in the back yard a few years ago, and now their spiky canes are everywhere -- spearing the hosta, invading the roses, and even migrating to the front yard where I pulled out some buckthorn last year.
I can't vouch for the safety of her neighbor's berries, but I've been nibbling mine for years -- with no ill effects. My dogs don't seem too interested in them, but they're usually tied up too far away to reach them.
Any berry experts out there? The dogs in my friend's neighborhood are depending on you!
