Putting a price tag on love

Valentine's Day is a week away. Is your budget ready?

You'll never see a diamond commercial play out in my household. I'm not very romantic. Neither is my husband. I haven't even thought about whether I'm buying him a present for Valentine's Day yet, and it's only about a week away. I do know that I won't buy him a card; I think they're generally a waste of money (Yeah, not terribly sentimental, either).

And is there any parent out there who actually enjoys helping young children prepare Valentine's for the entire class?

OK, so I sound like the equivalent of Scrooge for Valentine's Day. The anti-Cupid, perhaps?

But I know there are many couples who are busily planning for the holiday. And I'm curious: How much do you spend on Valentine's Day gifts? Do you plan for the expense year-round, or cross your fingers and hope there's money? Or is now the time you cash in your holiday gift cards or credit card rewards?
