Chuck D

They're celebrating Public Enemy in Iowa City. That's right. No, this is not an April Fool's Day joke or a Flavor Flav reality-show bit. PE frontman Chuck D, Bomb Squad producers Hank Shocklee and Keith Shocklee and journalist/hip-hop activist Harry Allen will be at the University of Iowa Thursday to celebrate "Fear of a Black Planet: 20 Years Later." The group will discuss the classic PE album "Fear of a Black Planet" at 7 p.m. at Englbert Theater. (It's free and open to the public.) The event is part of the current on-campus exhibit Two Turntables and a Microphone: Hip-Hop Contexts featuring Harry Allen's Part of the Permanent Record: Photos from the Previous Century, which is on view at the Black Box Theater through June 27. Public Enemy also will be interviewed on the campus radio, KRUI, at 12:30 p.m. Thursday (kruiradio.org). If you're heading to Iowa City, check out this week's fifth annual Mission Creek Festival featuring Booker T., the Meat Puppets, Camera Obscura, VV Brown, the Bomb Squad, Xiu Xiu, Grant Hart, Greg Brown, David Bazan and many others.
