A 37-year-old Prior Lake man is in the Carver County jail on charges that he sexually assaulted a 12-year-old in early 2008, while living in Chaska on supervised release as a Level 2 sex offender.

Travis Olsen assaulted the victim over "an extended period of time," Chaska police Capt. Jon Kehrberg said in a news release Thursday.

Olsen has two prior sexual assault convictions, from 1997 and 1998, whose victims were juvenile acquaintances in Scott County. He was sent to prison in 1998, served two-thirds of his sentence and was put on supervised release in 2003 for the final one-third of the sentence, according to news reports from 2008.

Olsen, who was arrested Wednesday, is now registered as a Level 3 sex offender, but did not have that status until late 2008, when his supervised release as a Level 2 sex offender was revoked for engaging in unsupervised activities with a 13-year-old girl. He was sent back to prison to serve the remaining two months of his sentence, then released with a Level 3 designation.

Olsen's first court appearance will be Friday.
