Prior Lake fiber optic plan reaches council

July 22, 2012 at 2:55AM

A proposed $35 million fiber optic network in Prior Lake reaches the City Council this week after months of preparation.

Key questions facing the city, according to a memo to council members from Dan Rogness, community and economic development director, include:

• "Can we do the full build-out segmented over time to certain areas of the city?"

• "What assumptions are built into making this financially feasible?"

City Council members are expected to spend a good deal of time examining the project in an informal setting late Monday afternoon before their regular evening meeting.

The city formed a Broadband Advisory Committee last September with the task of deciding whether such a network of super-high-speed digital transmission would be an asset to the city in its quest for economic development.

Financing would take the form of a revenue bond, paid back by user proceeds.
