Primary turnout around the state

August 12, 2010 at 2:36AM

The new August date and the summer heat didn't deter Minnesotans from going to the polls. Almost 15 percent turned out Tuesday, in line with turnout numbers from primaries in 2002 and 2006. But there was nuance to the numbers. Check out these turnout highlights and lowlights:

CLAY COUNTY didn't find much to excite it on the primary ballot.

Fewer than 7 percent of voters turned out in that west- central county, giving it the lowest turnout in the state.

HENNEPIN COUNTY, a stronghold of Margaret Anderson Kelliher's, turned out at just barely above the state average. Fifteen percent of eligible voters went to the polls in the state's largest county.

THE IRON RANGE and THE ARROWHEAD region turned out big. Populous St. Louis County, home of Duluth, sent a fifth of its people to the polls. Cook County, with 36 percent, and Lake County, with 35 percent, led the state in turnout.
