John Garvey, president of the Catholic University of America, will discuss the challenges facing U.S. Catholic colleges and universities at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the University of St. Thomas. The talk will be held at the Anderson Student Center on the St. Paul campus.
Pressures at Catholic colleges topic of talk

"While all institutions of higher learning are confronting economic and demographic challenges, Catholic colleges and universities face added pressures," said Elizabeth Schiltz, a professor at St. Thomas' School of Law, in a statement from St. Thomas.
"Some students are Catholic, some are from other religions and some are not from any religion. We strive to ... nurture this diversity, and at the same time we strive to protect our religious identity."
Garvey's talk is part of a lecture series that began in March. Scheduled this fall are visits from the Rev. James Burns of Boston College and Patricia O'Hara of the Notre Dame School of Law.
