Centennial, Bloomington Jefferson, Blaine, Eden Prairie and Duluth East scrimmaged round-robin today at Duluth Heritage Sports Center, in a Class 2A prep boy's hockey junkies' delight.

Individuals who stood out:

Blaine
Sr. F Jonny Brodzinski

Bloomington Jefferson
Sr. F Eric Freschi, Jr. D Ian Janco, Sr. F Ryan Siiro, Sr. F Tim Donahue

Centennial
Jr. D Joey Hess, Sr. F Riley Colvard

Duluth East
Jr. D Nate Repensky, Jr. F Jake Randolph, Jr. F Dom Toninato

Eden Prairie
Sr. F Kyle Rau, Sr. G Andrew Ford, Sr. D Nick Seeler, Sr. D Curt Rau

Other genius observations, quotes and final skors:

. Duluth East over-powered Centennial 4-0 in the opener. "It was an eye-opener for our guys, against a top-10 team," Centennial coach Eric Aus said. "Duluth skates off the puck real well."

. Bloomington Jefferson 1, Centennial 1

. Eden Praire defeated Duluth East 2-1. A state tourney preview?

. Blaine 4, Bloomington Jefferson 1

. Blaine coach David Aus is bullish on his young team. "Everyone is excited about Maple Grove in our section, but we'll be better than most people think, especially late in the season," he said. "We've got some big-time young players, including three freshmen who are blue-chippers."

. Eden Prairie 2, Bloomington Jefferson 2. EP star Kyle Rau suffered a minor knee injury early and was held out for the rest of the physical, intense scrimmage. "Kyle wanted to return, but we held him out as a precaution," Eden Prairie coach Lee Smith said afterwards.

. Meantime, Rau, a Gophers recruit, said he's at peace wth his decision to play his senior season at EP rather than join Sioux City of the United States Hockey League. "The plan is to compete with my friends and join the Gophers a year from now," said Rau.

"Kyle leaving our program would have taken a big bite out of our team, no doubt about it," said Smith. "He was a big key to us winning our first state title two years ago, and he's the preseason favorite to win Mr. Hockey. He's an unselfish two-way player, a tremendously hard worker and great kid."

. Duluth East 2, Blaine 1. Greyhounds scored scrimmage-winner on PP in final minute.

.Final thoughts: EP has the firepower and depth to give top-ranked Edina a run. Bloomington Jefferson plays like a football team on skates. Blaine is reloading. Centennial is competitive. Duluth East is a year away from contending for a Class AA championship, and must get past Cloquet and Grand Rapids in Section 7AA to return to state.
