Prep athletes of the week: Minneapolis Edison sophomore rolls into boys' tennis tournament

Polly Couillard was looking for a sport to get her three sons involved in for a family activity. She decided on tennis.

The youngest, Logan, now excels on the court. The sophomore won the Class 1A, Section 5 individual tournament singles championship with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ben Stevenson of Fridley.

The unbeaten left-hander only dropped five games en route to the section title. He finished third in the section a year ago.

"Logan blew his opponents off the court," Tommies first-year coach Nancy Akpan said. "He has a big forehand and a crazy spin serve that gives every player trouble and also moves really well on the court."

He will open state tournament play Thursday, June 8, at 8 a.m. at the Reed Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

"What sets Logan apart from anyone on the team is that he's mentally tough and so humble," Akpan said. "I'm so lucky to get the opportunity to coach an amazing athlete of his caliber."

Jablonski had five goals and five assists in a pair of Stillwater victories as the No. 8-ranked Ponies concluded the regular season on an 11-game winning streak. "She is one of the most athletic players to ever play for Stillwater," Ponies coach Rick Reidt said. The senior has 41 goals on the season.

Peka made Minnetonka look like anything but a No. 6 seed during the first week of the Class 4A, Section 2 tournament. She went 2-1 (beating No. 10 Bloomington Jefferson 4-2 and Burnsville 1-0 and losing to No. 2 Prior Lake 2-1) with a 0.66 ERA.

Matthews dominated the sprinting events in the Mississippi 8 Conference meet. The senior was a triple winner, earning the top spot in the 100- (11.06 seconds), 200- (22.50) and 400-meter (48.99) dashes. He was the runner-up in the 400 at the Class 2A state meet a year ago.

Ringquist played a big role in Wayzata winning its 11th consecutive state crown. She was on the Trojans' winning extended team and was the runner-up in figures and extended duets with partner Brittney Torguson.
