Prediction: Pain for the Pack in a close one

The Vikings aren't quite as good as they look, but they should pull off a tight victory over a Packers team that also isn't quite what they appear.

Vikings

Defense

The Metrodome miracle and wins over the Browns and Lions have overshadowed some of the Purple's problems. The defensive line has underachieved; Kevin Williams is the only guy consistently making plays (there's a reason I wear my 93 jersey to games). Pat Williams has only looked dominant in spurts, and seems lost at others, and thus the rush defense has slipped from previous years. Jared Allen is trying the speed outside rush every time, and usually seems to be out of the play. Without a quality pass rush, the pass coverage has broken down at times. But let me be clear here--the defense is still playing very well, but not at the Total Domination level that is rightfully expected of them.

Offense

The offensive line has also been playing poorly. The rush blocking has been fine, but the pass protection is poor--there's a reason Favre is beat up. At times, Hutchinson looks like the only good lineman the Vikings have; if his back injury is a problem (it doesn't seem to be at this point), the line could easily fall apart. On the plus side, the emergence of Percy Harvin and the improved play of Sidney Rice has suddenly made wide receiver an area of strength, and with The Ol' Gunslinger and AD and Chester, the Vikes are playing exceptionally well at the skill positions. And it's hard to argue with 34, 27, and 27 points scored.

Packers

Defense

Luckily for Vikings fans, the Pack has problems of their own; they're 2-1, but struggled against the Bears and lost at home to the Bengals. The defense is improved, and the pass defense is solid thank to their good cornerbacks, but the rushing defense has remained mediocre, and injuries to their safeties won't help. Dom Capers' 3-4 could give the Vikes some problems, like the Niners, but the Pack doesn't have the talent in the front seven that the Niners do.

Offense

Aaron Rodgers has done a good job of protecting the ball (zero turnovers thus far), but both the passing and rushing games have underachived (due in part to playing the improved defenses of the Bears and Bengals). Offensive line injuries have hurt and could prove decisive, particularly with tackle Clifton out. Rodgers tends to hold onto the ball and take a lot of sacks, so maybe this is the game where Allen, Edwards, and Williamses can rack up sacks.

Prediction

Intangibles are always important in a game like this; both teams are going to be jacked up for a key divisional game on MNF, not to mention that whole Favre thing. The Vikings' slight weaknesses on both lines will enable the Packers to stay close, but as long as Favre keeps handing off to AD and dumping off to Chester and getting the ball to Harvin in space (and hopefully Shiancoe will get his game going and be the safety valve Favre needs), and the defense contains Grant and puts some heat on Rodgers, the Viking should stay in control and win a close game.

Vikings 27, Packers 20

Season record: 2-0
