Decades ago Honda and Toyota achieved automotive success by delivering reasonable cars for a reasonable price and never looked back. Hyundai seems to be writing another chapter in the book on "Carmaking for Dummies."

Hyundai's approach with the Sonata has been to compete directly with both Honda's Accord and Toyota's Camry and it appears to be right on target with what can affectionately be called a "Cam-Cord."

Driving expectations

The 2006 Sonata LX was and is a basically nice car with clean lines and an interior that possessed many of the cues found in more upscale vehicles. There was plenty of technology inside too, but one doesn't need a manual to figure out how to start the engine or turn on the radio. In an age of over-engineering, it's refreshing to feel smarter than the car you drive.

The Sonata LX handled well on freeways, delivering adequate power and a solid ride. It tackled tight parallel parking with ease. It was (and is) very predictable, which in driving circles should be a good thing.

Driving value

The Sonata LX 3.3-liter V-6 engine was a competent power plant, cranking out 235 horses. And, the vehicle looked more expensive than it was. Hyundai boasted class-leading standard safety equipment on its Sonata LX and a long list of classy features it calls High Value Features, all of which were standard. The features list read like the sticker of a luxury European touring sedan - except for the price.

Indeed, a number of car-buying guides and consumer sources rate the 2006 Hyundai as a "best bet."
