Power Outages Will Extend Northward

November 13, 2009 at 1:25PM

Power outages are already widespread from North Carolina through easternVirginia and up into southeastern Maryland due to the combination of strongwinds and a saturated ground from all the heavy rainfall. Residents in thisregion should be prepared for an extended period of blackouts and have plentyof food, water and batteries on hand.Trees, especially those that still have their foliage, are much moresusceptible to being uprooted when the ground is saturated and soft.

By Thursday night and Friday, additional power outages due to fallen trees anddowned power lines should be anticipated over coastal New Jersey, and perhapsas far north as extreme southeastern Long Island if the heavier rain gets thatfar north.
