The post office in New Prague is back in business after a weeklong shutdown. Service resumed Friday after operations were shifted 15 miles away to Belle Plaine.

The Postal Service abruptly suspended operations in New Prague last week over safety concerns with the building it leases at 124 E. Main St. Health concerns surfaced March 23 as flooring was being replaced as part of a remodeling project by the landlord.

Out of caution, the post office closed the New Prague location. All mail and packages in the facility at the time were cleaned and sent out for delivery or were available for pickup earlier this week, said Kristy Anderson, a USPS spokeswoman.

The building reopened Friday after a "thorough environmental cleaning of the facility" that included all surfaces, mail and the HVAC system was completed. A contracted environmental specialist deemed the facility safe for occupancy, Anderson said.

"We look forward to serving our customers again," she said.

The New Prague post office is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. weekdays and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturdays.
