Pope Francis, not satisfied with his nearly 9 million Twitter followers, is expanding his social media presence by joining Instagram.

"I am beginning a new journey, on Instagram, to walk with you along the path of mercy and the tenderness of God," he tweeted, garnering 10,000 retweets and 26,000 likes.

His newly created Instagram, @franciscus, already has 750,000 followers despite being only several hours old.

So far there are two photos of the Pope himself in prayer.

It's the latest thoroughly modern move for the millenial-friendly Pope, who also recently made history by agreeing to appear in a movie, as himself, which will mark the film debut for any pope in the history of the Catholic Church.
