If Wednesday's Class 2A True Team state swimming and diving meet were just a competition of the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke events, Edina coach Jeff Mace would like the Hornets' chances.

As it is, Edina could be in the driver's seat.

The Hornets enter the meet, which begins at 7 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center, among the favorites in Class 2A along with Stillwater, Minnetonka and Wayzata.

"All four are outstanding teams this year," Mace said. "It should be a fantastic showing."

One of the many strengths for all four teams is depth, which always helps but is particularly key in a meet using the True Team format; every swimmer's performance counts points, not just the top finishers.

Heading into the meet, Hornets swimmers own the top four times in the state in the 200 individual medley and three of the top four in the 100 breaststroke. Edina also has the state's top time in the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay, and the second-best time in the 200 freestyle relay.

Not surprisingly, Stillwater, Minnetonka and Wayzata are all in the mix at the top of those relays as well.

"We try to practice every facet of the sport; we're not freestyle-dominated in practices," Mace said. "Even the kids who are not swimming in this meet have helped our practices, because the competition level is so much higher now. They really push each other, because they know what it takes."

The True Team meet, sponsored by the coaches association, was established in 2004. Stillwater won the first six meets before Wayzata claimed the championship last fall.
