A Minneapolis police officer was shot in the leg Friday night in north Minneapolis, apparently as the result of an accident or ricochet as officers opened fire at two threatening dogs, police said.
According to police Inspector Mike Martin, officers were helping Department of Corrections officials arrest a fugitive at a house near the intersection of Ilion and 22nd Avenues N. about 9:45 p.m.
The fugitive ran out the back door of the house, followed by two pit bulls that ran at the officers in a threatening manner, Martin said. An officer or officers shot at the dogs, and one bullet hit a veteran officer in the leg. He was taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, where he was listed in good condition.
The scene, about three blocks north of West Broadway, was cordoned off and busy with squad cars as an investigation continued late Friday.
No one else was hurt, Martin said. One person was arrested, but the fugitive being sought was still at large. One of the two dogs was killed.
