Authorities have identified the woman fatally struck by a sport utility vehicle Monday afternoon while crossing the northbound lane of Hwy. 120 in Maplewood.

Laura Elfstrum, 45, of Oakdale, was struck about 5:45 p.m. as she attempted to cross the road, which is also called Century Avenue, outside of a crosswalk, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Police said the woman and a companion had been walking southbound along the right shoulder of the road right before the incident, which happened just north of 10th Street. A State Patrol spokesman was not immediately available for comment Tuesday morning.

The driver of the 2011 Ford Escape was going between 20 and 25 miles per hour. It was unclear whether charges will be filed against the 78-year-old driver.

No further details were available.
