SUGAR LAND, Texas — Police are trying to determine why a former pastor from the Houston area fatally shot his wife and 11-year-old son, tried to strangle his daughter, then killed himself.
Richard Logan, 53, killed 48-year-old Diana Logan and their son, Aaron, at their home in Sugar Land on Tuesday, police said. He then drove about 160 miles (260 kilometers) to San Marcos, where his adult daughter attends college, and attempted to strangle her, police said.
"We're not sure why he disengaged and left," said Sugar Land police spokesman Doug Adolph.
Logan then shot himself at TAS Environmental Service, a consulting company, just south of San Marcos. Police at the scene recovered the same gun used to kill Logan's wife and son. Police didn't immediately know what connection, if any, Logan had with the business.
An investigation is ongoing.
Rodolph said detectives haven't identified Logan's motive in the killings.
The former pastor founded Attack Poverty, a nonprofit that connects people with jobs, education, medical care and spiritual outlets in underserved communities. He posted frequently on social media about his nonprofit's initiatives and his family.
The Logans' deaths shook their community.
