A driver plowed into a woman pulling her children in a wagon in a Twin Cities intersection and fled the scene, leaving one of the kids severely injured, officials said.

The incident occurred about 8:20 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Mitchell Road and Chestnut Drive in Eden Prairie, police said.

A Police Department report obtained by the Minnesota Star Tribune listed the injured victims as Spogmai Kamawal and her children, 2-year-old Somaia and 11-month-old Samir.

The woman and her four children were walking toward their home less than a half-mile away when the crash occurred, police said.

Somaia was in critical condition as of Friday afternoon, according to HCMC. Spogmai Kamawal and Samir were treated at the hospital and released, police said.

“Our hearts are with this family during what is an unimaginably difficult time,” read a statement from Police Sgt. Bryan Dean. “This type of reckless and tragic act will not go unanswered. We are committed to finding the individual responsible and holding them fully accountable.”

Dean added that “the children on foot were not physically injured but are understandably traumatized by the incident.”

According to police:

The woman was in the crosswalk while crossing Mitchell Road from west to east near Pheasant Woods Park. She had four children with her, two of them in a wagon she was pulling.

A driver in a white vehicle heading north on Mitchell, where the speed limit is 30 miles per hour, struck Spogmai Kamawal and Samir and Somaia in the wagon and kept going. A piece of a driver’s-side vehicle mirror was left at the scene.

Dean described the intersection as overall “very safe. It’s marked, [and it’s] something the city always continues to address as far as safety for our crosswalks and our streets.”

A reward is being offered through the Eden Prairie Crime Prevention Fund for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the crash.

Police say that anyone with tips about the incident can call Eden Prairie police at 952-949-6200. Any photo or video evidence can be submitted to police online.
