Police are urging residents to keep their garages locked after a string of burglaries last week from southwest Minneapolis garages.
There were 38 reported burglaries between July 16 and 23, according to Fifth Precinct police. For nearly half of them, the suspects got into the garage because the overhead door was open or unlocked. For sixteen others, the suspects pried the doors open or broke windows, Fifth Precinct police said in a news release.
High-end bicycles were the most commonly stolen item. Many of them had no recorded serial number, which makes them difficult to track and return. Officials encourage bike owners to keep their bikes' serial numbers, which police can enter into both local and national databases to track then down.
Fifth Precinct police have arrested three people in connection to these burglaries.
To prevent similar burglaries, police advise that people always lock their garage doors, consider upgrading their locks to a deadbolt and record serial numbers for bicycles, electronics and anything else stored in garages.
