PLYMOUTH, Wis. — New York City has its famous ball drop in Times Square on New Year's Eve. But, a small Wisconsin community knows how to celebrate in its own rite — with its annual giant cheese drop.
Hundreds of spectators are expected to watch as an 80-pound wedge of cheese descends from a 100-foot fire truck ladder in Plymouth at the stroke of midnight.
Plymouth Arts Center director Donna Hahn says "it's just something fun to do on New Year's Eve" and unique to Plymouth, a city of about 8,500 in eastern Wisconsin.
Sheboygan Press Media (http://shebpr.es/1y4431i ) says the Sartori Co., a cheesemaker founded in Plymouth in 1939, provides free hors d'oeuvres at the Art Center which hosts music, food and a cash bar Wednesday night.
