Plymouth Av. Bridge in Minneapolis reopening Monday after 2 years

A well-traveled bridge over the Mississippi River that connects the north and northeast Minneapolis is about to reopen after being closed for two years for repairs, city officials announced Friday.

The Plymouth Avenue Bridge was closed in October 2010 after inspectors found significant deterioration in concrete and cables inside its girders. At the time, motor vehicles were making more than 14,000 trips a day across the bridge.

Repairs began this past summer, and the span can now reopen sometime Monday to motor vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians as the remaining work continues.

The reopening of the 30-year-old span just north of downtown will start with one lane in each direction until this season's construction wraps up in late November. Then all lanes will be open through winter.

When construction resumes in April, lane restrictions will resume until the final repairs are complete by summer's end.
