LONDON — The man who knocked Roger Federer out of Wimbledon is going home himself. Sergiy Stakhovsky fell 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 to Jurgen Melzer in the third round Friday at the All England Club.
Stakhovsky, the 116th-ranked Ukrainian, used his serve-and-volley style to handcuff Federer in a four-set stunner Wednesday on Centre Court, sending the seven-time champion home after the second round and snapping his string of 36 straight appearances in Grand Slam quarterfinals.
Two days later, Stakhovsky couldn't produce any of the same magic against the 37th-ranked Melzer of Austria.
In his win over Federer, Stakhovsky got 72 percent of his first serves in and won 65 percent of his points at the net. On Friday, he got 62 percent of his first serves in and won 58 percent of the net points.
