Pirelli announces changes to rear tires for German GP after blowouts during British race

July 2, 2013 at 6:45PM

MILAN — Pirelli says it will change the tires used by Formula One cars after a string of blowouts during the British Grand Prix.

The Italian manufacturer will use a Kevlar belt on its rear tires for the German Grand Prix on Sunday to help prevent punctures.

Starting with the Hungarian Grand Prix this month, Pirelli will revert to the tires it used in 2012 combined with the current compounds from this season.

Tires exploded on four cars during the British GP, including those of Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa.

Pirelli said the problem was caused by a number of factors, including the rear tires being mounted the wrong way and low tire pressure.
