My colleague, Kim Palmer, wrote last week about the recent surge of fondness for the pink bathroom, saying that a new wave of homeowners "appreciates their practical durability, midcentury character and quirky signature color." There's even a website called "Save the Pink Bathrooms."
As the owner of a 1949-built rambler with one garish green bathroom and another gray one with a giant pink bathtub, I can honestly say that it's a stretch to appreciate them.
The gray tiled bathroom is actually lovely. The pink commode and sink have been long replaced by white ones but the pink tub remains. I keep it hidden behind a white shower curtain but have visions of guests pulling it back to reveal the garish pink tub.
It does, however, have its benefits. It's square - about 4 feet by 4 feet - and has a seat in it. Apparently, it was designed for the original owner's mother-in-law, who lived in the adjoining bedroom. For us, it's the perfect spot to give our dog a bath. At least she doesn't mind the pink!
Am I missing something here? Do you see any redeeming qualities about a pink bathroom? Or are pink-bath lovers just putting a positive spin on an ugly bathroom?
