Pilot dies when small plane crashes near Rochester

February 10, 2008 at 3:28AM

A pilot was found dead Saturday after a single-engine plane crashed in a field near Grand Meadow in southern Minnesota.

A database search of the plane's tail number indicated that it was owned by a Stillwater man. Mower County Sheriff Terese Amazi said the identity of the pilot would be released today.

Investigators believe the pilot was the only person aboard the Cessna 140.

The plane was flying from New Richmond, Wis., to Fulton, Mo., with a stopover planned in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The pilot's last contact with controllers was at 12:50 a.m., when it was over Rochester. The wreckage was found about 25 miles southwest of Rochester.
