'Scapegoat'

Opens Friday: A tragic historical episode is crucial to the action of Christina Ham's new drama. In 1919, black sharecroppers in rural Arkansas met in a church to unionize. They were set upon by a white mob and slaughtered, in what became known as the Elaine Massacre. The play is set then, and now, as two interracial couples grapple with the past. Marion McClinton directs a cast headlined by powerhouse performers James A. Williams and Regina Marie Williams, who recently starred in Ham's "Nina Simone: Four Women" at Park Square Theatre. Jennifer Blagen and Dan Hopman, actors of heft and gravitas, round out the ensemble. (7:30 p.m. Fri.-Sat. and Wed.-Thu., 3 p.m. Sun. Pay what you wish. Ends June 26. Pillsbury House Theatre, 3501 Chicago Av. S., Mpls. 612-825-0459, pillsburyhouseandtheatre.org)

FILE -- A rent deposit slot at an apartment complex in Tucker, Ga., on July 21, 2020. As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
