Picking a personal budgeting tool

Keeping track of your money is easier than ever with online personal finance sites. The difficulty is deciding which site to use.

I wrote my Sunday column on web tools that can help those of you resolving to keep better tabs on your money in 2010.

I devoted a big chunk of space to personal financial management tools that collect your bank accounts and credit cards in one place in order to categorize your spending and calculate your net worth.

Thing is, more of these sites are cropping up every month. I'm sure I've missed some of them. I encourage you to share the tools I've missed in the comments section.

The first thing to do when comparing these sites is to see if your bank is supported. If not, that obviously narrows it down. Then you might want to check their mobile apps if you are on the go and like to have constant access. After that, the best way to select one of these sites is by touring around and deciding whether you like what you see.

You'll notice that I did not write on security in this post. It's best for you to go to each individual site and read their security protocols.

All of the sites are free to consumers except zendough.com, which has additional features such as ID theft assistance, (which I frankly would never pay for and your credit card may offer in some form for no charge) and GreenSherpa.com, which costs $7.95 per month or $5.95 per month if you commit for one year.

I also asked some top dogs at these sites some questions that I hope will help you make a decision. I also contacted buxfer.com, but didn't hear back. I also learned about BudgetPulse too late to include it here. Here they are, in alphabetical order:
