Picking a pack of purple peppers

The peppers followed me home. Can I keep them?

No, this isn't supper, although parts of it could be. It's pot filler of the non-kitchen variety. They're what followed me home after I was browsing the garden center for something to fill pot gaps (a polite way of saying those pots had been in hiding with only their trailing vines remaining after overwintering). I couldn't resist the ornamental peppers, so cute and shiny they almost look fake. To complete the food theme, I added redbor kale and variegated sage, with a purple aster thrown in for fall color.

Since I'll be able to harvest the kale and sage when it's time to bring the pots in for the winter, I don't feel quite so guilty about buying annuals this late in the season. (More kale chips, yum!) The ornamental peppers are just that -- ornamental. But with the fiery peppers as deterrents, maybe the squirrels will finally leave the pots alone for a change, unless I have rogue squirrels with a taste for salsa.

Anyone grown any edible ornamental peppers? I think I might be scared to try these even if they weren't labeled as not edible.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
