September 7, 2013 at 9:44PM

Burnsville and Eagan are hosting their first pickleball tournament for older adults.

Players with recreational to intermediate pickleball skills are invited to play.

The tournament will start at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 17 at North River Hills Park, 11501 19th Av., Burnsville.

Cost to play is $20 per team, which includes a hot dog lunch, snacks and beverages. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.

Spectators may purchase lunch for $3.

Pickleball is a racquet sport brought to Minnesota by seniors who learned to play in warm locations during the winter. Played with hard paddles and a polymer whiffle ball, the game combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. It's played on a court with the same dimensions as a doubles badminton court over a net similar to a tennis net but mounted two inches lower.

To register, call the city of Eagan Parks and Recreation Department at 651-675-5500 by Sept. 10. A rain makeup date for the tournament is Sept. 19.
