Jonathan Biss and the SPCO

Friday-next Sunday: Jonathan Biss is not only a superb pianist, but a highly innovative thinker and writer about music. His latest project, Beethoven/5, sees him joining forces with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra in the commissioning of five piano concertos over the next five years, each inspired by one of Beethoven's works in the genre. American composer Timo Andres is first out of the starting blocks; Biss and the SPCO will premier Andres' new work "The Blind Banister" in a program that also features Beethoven's Second Concerto and Mozart's Piano and Wind Quintet. (8 p.m. Fri.-Sat.; 2 p.m. next Sun. $15-$53. Ordway Concert Hall, 5th and Washington Sts., St. Paul. 651-291-1144, thespco.org)
