Day 3 at Kiawah Island

Keep that card

Jordan Spieth: He'll lament missing a 17-foot par putt by mere inches on the 17th hole, but the redemption tour rolled on Saturday. Spieth made five birdies against that one blemish and shot the round of the day with a 4-under 68.

Toss that card

Bubba Watson: The wind was down. The scoring average was down. But Bubba's score was way up. The long-hitting lefty bombed on two of the par 5s, carding double bogeys. He settled for a disappointing 5-over 77, tumbling all the way to a tie for 58th.

On the course with ...

Benny Cook. One of two club pros to reach the weekend, Cook shot a 3-under 69 on Saturday — a score that matched his major-winning playing partner, Webb Simpson. More than 20 friends and family traveled from Michigan and Florida to cheer on Cook this week. While they were in full voice as he knocked his tee shot to 12 feet on the par-3 17th and rolled in the birdie, it was Simpson who was cheering him along just as much. "I was impressed," Simpson said of Cook. "He seems like he's been on Tour 10 years. You know, a top-50 player in the world."

Pheeling Phine

At age 50, Phil Mickelson is the fourth player to hold the 54-hole lead/co-lead in a major at age 50 or older in the modern era (1934-present)

• Tom Watson, 59, 2009 British Open

• Greg Norman, 53, 2008 British Open

• Julius Boros, 53, 1973 U.S. Open.

Chip Shots

• Louis Oosthuizen led the field in strokes gained putting through two rounds. He was 78th out of 81 in the field in that category during the third round.

• Two-time Minnesota State Amateur champion Tom Hoge shot 2-over 74.

Quote of the Day

"Oh, geez. I don't know ... I'll be glued to the TV just as all you guys will and see what he does."

— Steve Stricker, U.S. Ryder Cup captain who, at age 54, also made the cut this weekend, on Mickelson's chances for an at-large captain's selection on the team.

Tweet of the day

"Kiawah Island will demand the winner hit the ball incredible to win but it's also the most luck involved course that I have caddied on in my 17 years of carrying heavy stuff."
