Day 1 at Kiawah island

Keep that card

Keegan Bradley: The 2011 PGA Championship winner played so well Thursday, even an errant shot into the grandstand on No. 18 couldn't derail his round. Bradley took a free drop, got away with a par and signed for a 3-under 69.

Toss that card

Dustin Johnson: The world No. 1 flew his opening tee shot into a waste bunker, and that was the start to a dismal afternoon. DJ shot 4 over, including a double on his last hole.

local connections

Erik van Rooyen: The former Gophers golfer briefly found the leaderboard with an eagle-birdie run on Nos. 11-12, but he stumbled on his back nine and finished even par.

Tom Hoge: The two-time Minnesota State Amateur winner is at 2 over.

Alex Beach: Playing in his fourth PGA Championship as a club professional out of Rye, N.Y., the Stillwater graduate shot 3 over.

Ben Polland: The Bloomington Jefferson graduate shot 4 over.

Derek Holmes: The Edina golf store manager who became the first Minnesota PGA pro in seven years to earn a spot in the PGA Championship field shot 7 over.

Day 2

Plenty of big names have plenty of work to do for a shot at the weekend. ESPN has coverage beginning at noon.
