NEW YORK, N.Y. – The NCAA wrestling championships are a three-day event at Madison Square Garden. But it only took two days for Penn State to clinch its fifth national title in six years.

The only question left Saturday about the Nittany Lions was how many national champions would they have?

They have five wrestlers in the championship matches. Only Iowa in 1997 and Oklahoma State in 2005 has had as many as five.

In the title matches for Penn State are senior Nico Megaludis at 125 pounds, sophomore Zain Retherford at 149, redshirt freshman Jason Nolf at 157, redshirt freshman Jo Nickal at 174 and senior Morgan McIntosh at 197.

The Lions have 114 points into the finals, followed by Oklahoma State (79.5) and Iowa (77.5).

"This is a team that we could potentially have 10 All-Americans," Penn State coach Cael Sanderson said. "But these guys, they've had a great tournament and scored a lot of bonus points. Zain is a sophomore and we've got freshmen back, good kids coming in, great recruits coming in, so we're definitely excited about the future of the program."

Two Gophers place

Junior Brett Pfarr of the Gophers finished third at 197 pounds by beating Nathan Burak of Iowa 2-1, getting the decisive point on riding time. Earlier, Pfarr beat Jared Haught of Virginia on a 13-4 major decision.

Junior heavyweight Michael Kroells took seven place with a 5-2 over Max Wessell of Lehigh. Wessell had beaten him 15-7 in the second round.

"You have to be grateful you got those two All-Americans," Gophers coach J Robinson said. "… [But] obviously, we have a long way to go."
