Penguins shut out Bruins after Boston exacts its retribution

PITTSBURGH 3, BOSTON 0: Marc-Andre Fleury made 17 saves for Penguins' first shutout of the season in their victory over the Bruins on Thursday night in Pittsburgh. After their much-anticipated retaliation against Matt Cooke, right, the Bruins showed little passion despite fighting for a playoff berth. Cooke, whose blindside hit sidelined Boston's Marc Savard indefinitely with a concussion on March 7 in Pittsburgh, took the ice for the first time 1:53 into the game. Seconds later, he and Shawn Thornton got into a fight. Cooke's helmet fell off and he went to the ice. Thornton, who kept swinging while Cooke was crouched, was given a 10-minute misconduct.

PHOENIX 4, FLORIDA 3 (SO): Radim Vrbata scored with 59.7 seconds left in the third period to force overtime, then added the winner in the third round of a shootout in the Coyotes' comeback victory over the host Panthers.

TORONTO 2, NEW JERSEY 1 (SO): Phil Kessel scored in regulation and in a shootout to help the host Maple Leafs win for the fifth time in six games. Nikolai Kulemin and John Mitchell also scored shootout goals for Toronto, and Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 24 saves.

ATLANTA 6, OTTAWA 3: Nik Antropov and Colby Armstrong scored two goals apiece for the Thrashers, who gave themselves hope in the playoff race with a second consecutive victory over the Senators in Atlanta. The Thrashers are three points out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

ST. LOUIS 4, N.Y. RANGERS 3: The visiting Blues scored four times on their first 14 shots and handed the ninth-place Rangers a key loss in their pursuit of an Eastern Conference playoff spot. New York is three points behind Boston with 11 games left.

CAROLINA 4, WASHINGTON 3 (OT): Ray Whitney scored at 4:02 of overtime to give the Hurricanes the victory over the Capitals in Raleigh, N.C. Washington played without captain and scoring leader Alex Ovechkin, serving the second of a two-game suspension for his hit on Chicago defenseman Brian Campbell on Sunday.

BUFFALO 6, TAMPA BAY 2: Jason Pominville scored a hat trick and the Sabres beat the host Lightning to move within four points of New Jersey for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.

PHILADELPHIA 3, DALLAS 2: Scott Hartnell scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period to send the Flyers to the victory over the Stars' in Dallas. Brian Boucher made 25 saves for Philadelphia; top goalie Michael Leighton will be out at least eight weeks because of a sprained ankle.

• VANCOUVER 3, SAN JOSE 2: Roberto Luongo made 32 saves as the host Canucks beat the Sharks to move five points up on Colorado in the Northwest Division and within five of the Sharks atop the Western Conference.

CHICAGO 3, L.A. KINGS 0: Tomas Kopecky scored twice in a 3:20 span in the third, and Antti Niemi made 17 saves for his fifth career shutout in the Blackhawks' win over the Kings.
