A 28-year-old man was killed early Friday when he was struck by a vehicle while running across a freeway just north of downtown Minneapolis, the State Patrol said.

Kyle Day, of Springfield, Ill., was hit by a Ford Explorer that was heading west on I-94 at 7th Street at 3:08 a.m. He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center where he died, the State Patrol said.

The Ford Explorer rolled over after hitting Day. The driver, identified as Mark Smith, 40, of Marshall, Minn., was not injured. A passenger in the vehicle, Amelia Torres-Guevara, 45, of St. Paul, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, the patrol said.

Troopers on scene could not determine why the pedestrian was crossing or on the freeway, said Lt. Tiffani Neilson, a state patrol spokeswoman.

The crash had two left lanes of westbound I-94 blocked for a couple hours.
