Pedestrian hit, killed by semi in downtown Minneapolis

July 22, 2011 at 4:06AM

A woman crossing 11th Avenue S. behind the Metrodome in Minneapolis was hit and killed by a semitrailer truck on Thursday evening, police spokesman Stephen McCarty said.

About 7:20 p.m., an officer driving south on 11th Avenue S. was flagged down by a witness who said a vehicle had hit a pedestrian. The witness gave the officer a brief description of the truck. Moments later, it returned to the scene, McCarty said.

Efforts to save the victim were not successful. Her name has not been released. An autopsy will be done by the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.

The truck driver was taken to the police station for questioning. Tests for drugs and alcohol will be conducted, which is standard procedure.
