A Paynesville man was killed Monday after his car crossed the center line of a two-lane highway in Stearns County and crashed head-on into an SUV, authorities said.

Elmer L. Nelson, 69, died, the State Patrol said. The SUV driver, Wayne A. Hansen, also of Paynesville, wasn't hurt, the patrol said.

Nelson was driving east on Hwy. 55 in Paynesville about 3:45 p.m. when his vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane and hit the SUV, the patrol said.

Both drivers had their seat belts on, and alcohol use was not a factor in the crash.
