Gov. Tim Pawlenty has talked about Republicans moving away from the party's "country club" stereotype, but that's precisely where he's headed to fundraise.
Pawlenty will co-host a fundraiser at Woodhill Country Club in Wayzata on August 17 to support Republican California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman, who was formerly the CEO of eBay.
The event invitation asks for contributions of $25,900 to Whitman, and is also being hosted by Bill Hawkins, CEO of Medtronic, and Greg Page, CEO of Cargill.
On Monday, Pawlenty told reporters in Washington that his background makes him a candidate who can help squash the idea that Republicans are "a bunch of country club elitists" and "middle-aged, white guy CEOs."
Pawlenty is also holding a fundraiser breakfast for Iowa Rep. Steve Lukan at the Dubuque Golf and Country Club during his trip this weekend to Iowa, the first presidential caucus state. Tickets to that breakfast, however, start at just $25.
