Patrick Buchanan named Apple Valley boys' basketball coach

Patrick Buchanan was named the Apple Valley High School boys' basketball coach Tuesday.

He coached the Mayer Lutheran boys' team the past three seasons, compiling a 60-29 record, including a third-place finish in the Class 1A state tournament in 2018.

UMAC loses team

The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference announced that Iowa Wesleyan will withdraw as a football-only associate member effective with the end of the 2020-2021 academic year, leaving the UMAC with seven teams.

St. Scholastica withdrew from the UMAC last month — also effective June 30, 2021 — to join the MIAC.

• High jumper Yahya Madar of Mounds Park Academy signed with the Gophers track and field program. He won his event in the 2019 Class 1A state meet, clearing 6-10, tying a small-school state record set 38 years ago.

• Jameson Charles, a senior midfielder for Minneapolis Washburn, was named the Gatorade boys' soccer player of the year for 2019-20. He had 11 goals and 26 assists for the Millers. He has signed with North Carolina.

• Sy Chatman, a 6-8 forward who played for Cretin-Derham Hall, is transferring from Massachusetts to Southern Illinois. After sitting a season, he will have two years of eligibility left.

• Boston College goalie Ryan Edquist, of Lakeville, will be a graduate transfer at Minnesota State Mankato this upcoming season.
