Patrick Buchanan was named the Apple Valley High School boys’ basketball coach Tuesday.
He coached the Mayer Lutheran boys’ team the past three seasons, compiling a 60-29 record, including a third-place finish in the Class 1A state tournament in 2018.
UMAC loses team
The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference announced that Iowa Wesleyan will withdraw as a football-only associate member effective with the end of the 2020-2021 academic year, leaving the UMAC with seven teams.
St. Scholastica withdrew from the UMAC last month — also effective June 30, 2021 — to join the MIAC.
• High jumper Yahya Madar of Mounds Park Academy signed with the Gophers track and field program. He won his event in the 2019 Class 1A state meet, clearing 6-10, tying a small-school state record set 38 years ago.
• Jameson Charles, a senior midfielder for Minneapolis Washburn, was named the Gatorade boys’ soccer player of the year for 2019-20. He had 11 goals and 26 assists for the Millers. He has signed with North Carolina.
• Sy Chatman, a 6-8 forward who played for Cretin-Derham Hall, is transferring from Massachusetts to Southern Illinois. After sitting a season, he will have two years of eligibility left.
• Boston College goalie Ryan Edquist, of Lakeville, will be a graduate transfer at Minnesota State Mankato this upcoming season.
