Passenger dies in wrong-way crash near Bemidji

The 73-year-old woman was driving on the wrong side of Hwy. 2, according to the State Patrol.

A passenger was killed in a head-on crash near Bemidji that left the driver with critical injuries, authorities said Tuesday.

The collision occurred shortly after 11 p.m. Monday on Hwy. 2 in southern Beltrami County, according to the State Patrol.

Russell K. Porter, 82, of Bemidji, died in the crash, the patrol said.

Margaret K. Porter, 73, was traveling east on the westbound side of Hwy. 2 and struck a car head-on, according to the patrol. She was hospitalized in Fargo with life-threatening injuries.

The other driver, 21-year-old Athena A. Stanek, of Fosston, Minn., suffered noncritical injuries.

All three people had on seat belts, the patrol said.
