A 52-year-old woman was killed Tuesday near Lake Minnetonka after the car she was riding in tried to pass a semi and ran off the road.

Just after 3 p.m., police said that a vehicle traveling eastbound on Shoreline Drive in Minnetonka Beach pulled out to pass a semi truck also traveling eastbound. But as the car tried to pass the semi in a curve along the lake, crossing a double yellow line, the car swerved back into the lane to avoid a school bus headed west on Shoreline Drive, stopping to make a left turn onto Lafayette Road.

The car clipped the front bumper of the semi, ran off the road and struck a utility sign and tree, police said. The driver, a 46-year-old woman from Spring Park who hasn't yet been identified, was transported to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale for noncritical injuries. The 52-year-old female passenger, who also hasn't been named, died at the scene.

Police said the driver and passenger weren't wearing seat belts. The driver of the semi truck wasn't injured. Orono police and the State Patrol are investigating.
