Authorities have identified the St. Paul man who was stabbed to death earlier this week in a downtown Minneapolis parking ramp and have charged a Minneapolis man with second-degree murder and assault.
Killed in Ramp C near Interstates 394 and 94 early Monday was Brian Dean Nelson, 20, of St. Paul, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.
A second person, a 31-year-old man, also was stabbed and hospitalized with noncritical injuries, police said.
On Wednesday, Kevin L. Mims, 29, was charged in connection with Nelson's death and the other man's injuries. According to the complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court, a man who was with Mims and the two others that night told police that the four went to the Envy bar in downtown Minneapolis, then returned to Mims' car about 3 a.m.
Mims and his front-seat passenger -- the man who was injured -- argued about Mims "being cheap with his marijuana and money," the complaint said. Mims began hitting the man, who couldn't fight back because he had a broken wrist. Nelson, who was in the back seat, climbed out and went around to the passenger side, where he tried to pull Mims away, the complaint said. Mims stabbed both men, the complaint said. Nelson was able to run off, but collapsed near the parking ramp elevators.
The wounded man was stabbed in the arm. Nelson was stabbed in the heart and in his left armpit, the complaint said.
Mims is being held in the county jail in lieu of $550,000 bail.
