NFL owners voted on Tuesday to award the 2014 Super Bowl to New York/New Jersey to be held in the new Meadowlands Stadium. The owners, however, elected not to vote to expand the new overtime rule to the regular season.
Instead, the owners tabled the vote, which means the new OT format will be used only in postseason games. Under the new format, a team that loses the coin toss and gives up a field goal still has a chance to tie or win the game.
Owners voted 28-4 in favor of the new system at their March meetings. Some coaches, including Vikings coach Brad Childress, indicated that they preferred any rule change for the postseason also be applied to the regular season.
The owners, however, decided not to take up the issue at their meetings in Dallas this week.
