DFL Third District congressional candidate Ashwin Madia was temporarily suspended from practicing law in Minnesota after failing to file a renewal fee with the state court system, but he has rectified the situation.
The Madia campaign discovered the suspension Wednesday, and Madia, who had not been practicing law since announcing his candidacy in October, wrote a check for the $229 fee plus a $75 late fee to be reinstated, his campaign said. Court system officials confirmed the payment and reinstatement of his license.
Madia spokesman Abe Rakov called the incident an oversight and said it appeared that any notification of renewal for Madia's license might have gone to his parents instead of his new Plymouth address. Madia initially filed for his license while in the military and he listed his parents' address.
Madia's license expired July 1. He was admitted to the Minnesota Bar in October 2002.
Madia is challenging Republican Erik Paulsen and Independence Party candidate David Dillon for the Third District seat being vacated by Republican Jim Ramstad.
