Overnight closures scheduled for Stillwater bridge

September 2, 2010 at 12:47AM

The Stillwater Lift Bridge will close for three nights next week for electrical cable replacement.

No traffic can cross between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. from Sept. 7-9, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) said Wednesday.

Drivers can avoid the closure by crossing the St. Croix River at Hwy. 243 at Osceola, Wis., or Interstate 94 at Hudson, Wis. The lift bridge funnels about 18,000 vehicles a day between Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Lifts for boat traffic also will be halted during the closures.

The closures are needed as crews replace electrical cables for the gate arm system that controls traffic, MnDOT said. Cables were found to be malfunctioning recently and the gates are being operated manually until repairs are made.

Work will be rescheduled if weather is bad, MnDOT said.
