Sphinx or hawk moths, also called hummingbird moths, are insects with a wingspread of 2 to 5 inches, with a long proboscis used for gathering nectar from flowers.

In mid-September, when people see a hummingbird-like animal hovering in front of a garden flower during the day or in the evening, it's usually the white-lined sphinx, the most common of the hummingbird moths.
