Outagamie County storm: 2 campers injured, power out to 48K, hospital cancels surgeries

APPLETON, Wis. — A thunderstorm that caused substantial damage in central and northeastern Wisconsin hit the Outagamie County area particularly hard.

The National Weather Service has dispatched a survey team to see if a tornado touched down near Wrightstown.

According to Wisconsin Emergency Management, an elderly couple had minor injuries at a campground in Fremont in Waupaca County near Outagamie County border.

We Energies reported damage to three of their substations, causing 48,000 customers to lose power in mostly in Outagamie County. We Energies spokeswoman Cathy Schulze says it could take several days before power is restored to everyone.

All surgeries were canceled at Appleton Medical Center for Wednesday because they are operating on generator power.

The county and Grand Chute have both declared a State of Emergency.
